Zell is a student at Balamb Garden, and future member of SeeD. He joined Garden at age 13, aspiring to be like his grandfather. Although Zell acts cool at times, he is far from cool-headed. On the contrary, he is very short tempered, and can get into situations quite easily (like being called a "chicken-wuss"). Zell is a pro-active type of guy, and can rarely be found standing still. His classmates however, think Zell's pro-activeness as just being loud and being a show-off.

Zell is a local boy, because his hometown is the seaport town of Balamb, which is just a short drive from Balamb Garden. Zell continues to have a room ready for him, in the small house that his mother lives in. She is not Zell's natural mother though, as he was adopted. Zell likes to hoverboard around Garden, and enjoys eating the cafeteria hotdogs, when he can actually get his hands on one, that is...

Zell likes to fashion his hair upwards, which gives anyone a clear view of his facial features, including a most distinguishing tattoo on the left side of his face. It is a thin, black pattern that stretches from his forehead to near his jaw. Unlike most of his peers, Zell does not wield any conventional weapon, and relies on his martial arts to keep him alive during fights. He wears brass knuckles to augment his fist's strength.

Limit Breaks Zell's limit breaks separate him from the rest of the class, and is the chief reason for a No. 1 Power Ranking. When the sequence begins, you are given between 4 and 12 seconds to complete as many combinations as possible. If your fingers are quick, and you get the full 12 seconds of free time, you can expect Zell to hit the enemy from anywhere between 200,000 and 400,000 HP of damage. They weren't kidding when they say "Combat King."
